Extracting relevant mechanical information from 4D tomography data using Digital Volume Correlation


Summary:

4D tomography With the rapid development of 4D X-ray computed tomography, Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) has recently emerged as a powerful contactless, bulk strain measurement technique in experimental mechanics, materials science, and biomechanics. Learn about the importance of imaging noise and texture when using DVC (displacement/strain accuracy, texture analysis, subset size, etc.), understand how to perform a DVC analysis, analyse and compare the data with FE models in a sophisticated way. The training is organised in two parts: theory (0.5 day) and computer-based practical works (0.5 day) using the XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific™ Amira-Avizo Software 9.4 where two solutions are implemented (a classic subset based approach and a more robust global approach).

Who should attend?
Researchers working in the field of mechanics, physics, and materials science using 3D imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography who are interested to (i) compute 3D full-field displacements and strains for linking the microstructure to the mechanical/physical behaviour, (ii) use the DVC measured data to feed/validate finite element models, and (iii) identify material parameters using integrated DVC approaches. The attendees are requested to bring their own laptop to practise on the new XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension (free trial licence will be provided).

Theory (0.5 day on July 5th, 2018):

  • Introduction to 4D X-ray computed tomography and practical guide for designing an experiment prior to DVC
  • DVC principle: optical flow measurement, local/global approach, elastic regularization, integrated approaches
  • Texture and correlation length
  • Importance of noise and artefacts
  • Quantify displacement/strain uncertainty and bias

Practice (0.5 day on July 6th, 2018):

  • XDigitalVolumeCorrelation extension in the Thermo Scientific™ Amira-Avizo software 9.4
  • Tutorial in Avizo® to understand the impact of texture and SNR on displacement accuracy. How to tune the element (subset) size to get the best trade-off between spatial resolution and displacement/strain uncertainty? How to use correlation residuals?
  • Tutorial to learn how to combine DVC with advanced tools (image processing, FE modelling) and visualise the data in a sophisticated way:
    1. Case study 1 (deformation/failure mechanisms): investigate strain transfer in bone-cement implants, cracking in cast-iron materials, phase transformation in zirconia ceramics, or fracture toughness of plasterboards
    2. Case study 2: learn how to couple DVC with FE modelling
